Joseph Franklin, white supremacist serial killer, executed

A US white supremacist who targeted black and Jewish people in a nationwide killing spree has been put to death in the US state of Missouri. 

Joseph Franklin was executed for shooting dead a man and wounding two others outside a synagogue in 1977.

The 63-year-old was convicted of seven other racially motivated murders. He claimed to have committed 20 in total.

His execution came after the US Supreme Court upheld an appeal court's decision to lift a stay of execution.

In 1978 Franklin shot Hustler publisher Larry Flynt, leaving him partially paralysed, after seeing a picture of a mixed-race couple in one of his magazines.

According to CNN; “the two-hour film explores the events on the day that changed the nation – and the world, as well as how the public’s perceptions of what happened that day have changed through the years.
As the Kennedy shows continue leading up to the November 22 anniversary of his assassination, the various theories still resonate with us all these years later, but why? Maybe it is because we refuse to accept the fact that someone as inconsequential as Oswald could kill one of the most well guarded people in the world.
It is much less unsettling to believe Kennedy was killed as the result of a well planned and elaborate plot by a group at odds with his plans for America’s future. Whether we believe it was the Russians, the CIA, the FBI, Castro, the mob, or Vice President Johnson who were behind the assassination, we want to believe Kennedy died for a higher purpose than the attention seeking actions of a lone gunman.
The assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy five years later only served to confirm our suspicions that we had little power in determining the direction of our country.

IN 1963 we had a president who instilled hope and inspired the belief that we could lead the world on a path of peace and understanding. Kennedy told us we could go to the moon, and we did. He told us that maybe we should look at the Russian people as our neighbors sharing a small planet instead of our sworn enemies.
He accomplished the unimaginable task of getting Khrushchev to agree on the Limited Test Ban Treaty of 1963 just one year after the Cuban missile crisis. Kennedy brought us all together in the belief that we could work toward a common goal, no matter how hard it might be.

Say what you will about John F. Kennedy, but it cannot be denied that he was a president who knew how to lead. These days we are at the mercy of leaders who have made the shutdown of the government a regular possibility. About the only thing our leaders can agree on today is the fact that they will always disagree, regardless of how much it hurts the country.

What we have as a result is a country so at odds with itself that we see conspiracies everywhere, whether they exist or not.
Is it any wonder that we still question the assassination of President Kennedy?

Tom Hanks JFK documentary on CNN, 'The Assassination of President Kennedy,' worth watching

Apologies for this later reminder of yet another documentary on the JFK assassination, but this one should be both worthy and worth your time: CNN's "The Assassination of President Kennedy," Thursday at 9, and produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman (and Mark Herzog). It'll repeat at 11, and again Sunday at 9 and 11. (And there will be other airdates. Hard to miss this one.)

I've only sampled this two-hour film (and will watch more) but what I've seen makes this particular entry stand out because it's one of the rare films to actually build the entire tragic day -- Nov. 22, 1963 -- almost entirely through archival material, some of which I had not yet seen before. There are also many interviews, including of Dan Rather.

Again, I'm impressed with what I've seen, and no re-creations or docu-dramaturgy here, which has tended to distract or distort some of the other films.

Harbor Freight Tools Admits Security Breach

California-based Harbor Freight Tools recently began notifying its customers that its payment processing system was hacked earlier this year, and credit and debit card transactions made in its stores between May 6, 2013 and June 30, 2013 were accessed.

"In response, we immediately engaged a leading cyber security company to investigate and notices were posted in every store and on our Web site," company president Eric Smidt wrote in the notification letter [PDF]. "We blocked the attack and adopted enhanced security measures to make our systems more secure than ever."

The information accessed included card account numbers, expiration dates and card verification numbers. In fewer than one percent of cases, the cardholder's name was also accessed.

"Because we cannot identify which specific cards or information were actually taken, we are notifying our customers that we have been able to identify whose cards were used during the May 6, 2013 to June 30, 2013 time frame at each impacted store," Smidt wrote.

While no credit or identity protection services are being offered to those affected, the company is advising all recipients of the notification letter to monitor their card statements for fraudulent charges.

Facebook Messenger App Upgrade Available to All iOS, Android Users

The Facebook Messenger app update the company announced in late October is now available to all iOS and Android mobile users.

The update was originally rolled out to a small group of Android users only.

The most notable update to the app allows users to message anyone in their contacts who has the Messenger app, not just those they are Facebook friends with. The speed of messages also improved, meaning the app works much more like SMS or texting than it did before, said Peter Martinazzi, the Messenger product manager at Facebook.

The new versions of the app were also built specifically for Android and iOS operating systems, meaning the icons, color schemes, and layouts were designed to feel more natural on each OS, said Martinazzi.

The text messaging aspect of the update is important for Facebook's longterm plans around mobile user growth. In many countries where mobile users are routinely charged on a per-text basis, a free messaging service like Messenger could come in handy.
Users can download the iOS version in the App Store, and the Android version in Google Play.

Facebook’s redesigned Messenger takes aim at WhatsApp, Snapchat

Facebook is hoping to gain a stronger foothold in the competitive mobile messaging space with an updated version of its Messenger app, which now lets people message each other even if they aren’t Facebook friends.

This week the company announced an update to its standalone Messenger app, which lets users send text messages to each other, but without the usual other content on Facebook like the news feed and timeline profiles.

The updated app was available previously in a testing mode to a small number of users on Android-based devices, but now is available more widely to people on both Android and iOS.
Before the update, the app let users send messages just to their Facebook friends. Now it lets people send messages to anyone with a Facebook account – even if they’re not friends – as long as the sender knows the person’s phone number. The message appears in the recipient’s Messenger app or in the person’s Facebook messages folder.

By using Facebook’s network to send the message, it saves the sender an SMS charge, similar to other mobile-to-mobile messaging services like WhatsApp, Snapchat and WeChat, which have become popular among teenagers and young adults.

Messenger’s new feature may allow Facebook to better compete against those services. Facebook is losing some of its younger teenage users on a daily basis, the company reported during its last earnings call.

Facebook Messenger is now a texting replacement, and it got an iOS 7 makeover

Facebook has had its distinct look for some time now. Even with changes to the news feed and tweaks across its site, the logo, color scheme, and general appearance of the site and its apps have remained the same. But the company has begun on an image overhaul, including redesigning the like button for the first time ever. The latest face lift for the suddenly image-conscience company comes to the Facebook Messenger app. The standalone service for talking to your Facebook friends broke off of the social network’s standard app awhile ago and now it has a look all its own as well.

The app was initially rolled out to a small batch of Android users, but now it’s available widely for iOS and Android. That idea of wider exposure carries through the update as users will now have the ability to message people outside of their friends list, reaching anyone who uses the Facebook Messenger app. This makes the app less of a social network’s chat feature and more like a SMS or texting service. To coincide with this new focus, the speed and performance of the app has been improved so there isn’t that strange delay between messages that would sometimes occur.

This change may seem minuscule, but it’s at least somewhat indicative of Facebook’s direction when it comes to mobile. Making Facebook work as a text messenger rather than just a standalone version of Facebook chat means the service can be used in place of standard SMS options, circumventing any texting restrictions placed by carriers and making Facebook Messenger the go-to service for any sort of communication between Facebook friend or new contact.
While all of this change to functionality is well and good, the thing that is more likely to have people talking is the change in interface to Facebook Messenger. Gone is the look inherited from the social network. Instead, the app now looks like its own entity, barely even mentioning Facebook though it holds all of your contacts from it. A brighter, more vibrant color scheme with a flat design style makes the app look like it was built specifically with iOS 7 in mind. It’s very much a change of pace from the standard Facebook affair, and if the goal is to make the Messenger a service all its own, the new skin is probably for the best.

Kerry and Fabious heading to Geneva for Iran nuclear talks

Amid increasing optimism that a deal could be within reach, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabious are heading to Geneva to help in negotiations over Iran's nuclear program.

Kerry will fly to Geneva on Friday "in an effort to help narrow differences in negotiations" with Iran, two senior State Department officials said. European Union High Representative Catherine Ashton invited Kerry to the talks, the officials said. The French Foreign Ministry announced Fabious' plans to join the talks.

News of travel plans for Kerry and Fabious came hours after Iran's foreign minister said that officials could reach an agreement by Friday evening.

"I believe it is possible to reach an understanding or an agreement before we close these negotiations (Friday) evening," Iran's foreign minister and chief nuclear negotiator, Javad Zarif, told CNN's Christiane Amanpour.

Though he would not detail what such an agreement could include, he told the state-run Iranian News Agency, "We expect to make a breakthrough."

Israel is rejecting the possible agreement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said prior to meeting with Kerry on Friday, before traveling to Geneva.

"So Iran got the deal of the century and the international community got a bad deal," Netanyahu said. "This is a very bad deal. Israel utterly rejects it and what I am saying is shared by many, many in the region whether or not they express it publicly."

iPhone 6 Sapphire Screen Rumored as Apple Spends Half a Billion

Apple is putting half a billion dollars towards an agreement that may deliver an iPhone 6 or iWatch with a screen that doesn’t scratch, even if you rub a piece of concrete on it.

Sapphire glass is already used for the lens cover of the iPhone 5s and the Touch ID home button, but its more exciting application is in the form of a display that can handle an incredible amount of abuse.
Sapphire glass is roughly 2.5 times stronger than the glass currently used in smartphones, many of which use Gorilla Glass from Corning. Jeff Nestel-Patt, Marketing Director at GT Advanced Technologies calls the technology, “virtually scratch free,”

In the video below, watch as an iPhone retrofitted with a thin sheet of Sapphire glass is smashed and scratched with a piece of concrete. Gorilla Glass shown in this video shows scratches, but the Sapphire glass simple breaks pieces of the concrete apart with no damage to the actual screen.

Two issues are holding back an iPhone with a full Sapphire display, the cost of the material and full scale production. GT Advanced Technologies pegs the cost premium at three to four times that of chemically strengthened glass, but according to Nestel Patel’s statements at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, mass production will help bring the cost in check. He expects that this will be a standard feature on smartphones in the next few years.

iPhone 5s pitted against the competition in expert camera phone review

Megapixel counts and optical zoom capabilities are constantly thrown around by smartphone makers, but when four of the most popular camera phones are put to the test, which one wins out? The Guardian supplied Dan Rubin, editor-at-large at Photographic Journal, with Apple’s iPhone 5s, Nokia’s Lumia 1020, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Zoom and Sony’s Xperia Z1 to see which phone makes for a better camera.
Rubin began by judging each phone based on its ergonomic appeal. The Samsung phone was quickly dismissed as the most unwieldy of the bunch, as Rubin described it as “more a camera that has a phone attached to it than the other way around.” The rest were deemed compact enough for pocket storage, although none had any particular advantages over the others in this department.

Next, Rubin tested the dynamic range of the phone lineup. Each phone handled a mixed dark-and-light shot fairly well, although the Nokia Lumia 1020 and the Apple iPhone (especially with HDR mode turned on) seemed to edge out the others. To demonstrate color reproduction, Rubin photographed a wall plastered with graffiti. Once again, the Lumia 1020 came out on top, this time right alongside the Sony.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Galaxy S4 Zoom had the most detailed and far-reaching zoom functionality. None of the other phones could match the sheer distance of the Zoom. Rubin also praised the stabilization of the Lumia 1020, which allowed him to take very clear shots even while zoomed in.The Xperia Z1, despite its high megapixel count, took a noticeably blurry, unattractive photo when zoomed in, and the iPhone 5s fared only a little better.

Rubin’s verdict came as a bit of a surprise: As an iPhone owner, he said that he didn’t see anything that would convince him, even as a professional photographer, to convert from the iPhone 5s to a new platform based on its camera alone. Each phone has its benefits (except for the Xperia Z1), but the iPhone 5s is Dan Rubin’s winner. That said, Rubin still does give a nod to the Lumia’s “industrial design, the quality of the pictures it takes, and how easy it is to use.”

Ever wonder how the universe could allow the existence of someone as annoying as your bratty little brother or sister? The answer lies in reproduction. If people — like your parents (ew!) — didn't reproduce, families would die out and the human race would cease to exist.

All living things reproduce. Reproduction — the process by which organisms make more organisms like themselves — is one of the things that set living things apart from nonliving matter. But even though the reproductive system is essential to keeping a species alive, unlike other body systems, it's not essential to keeping an individual alive.
In the human reproductive process, two kinds of sex cells, or gametes (pronounced: GAH-meetz), are involved. The male gamete, or sperm, and the female gamete, the egg or ovum, meet in the female's reproductive system. The female needs a male to fertilize her egg, even though it is she who carries offspring through pregnancy and childbirth. When the sperm fertilizes, or meets, the egg, this fertilized egg is called the zygote. The zygote goes through a process of becoming an embryo and developing into a fetus.
Humans, like other organisms, pass certain characteristics of themselves to the next generation through their genes, the special carriers of human traits. The genes that parents pass along to their children are what make children similar to others in their family, but they are also what make each child unique. These genes come from the father's sperm and the mother's egg, which are produced by the male and female reproductive systems.

When the topic of women's health care is raised, the first disease that comes to mind is probably breast cancer. But surprisingly, that's not the number one health care issue confronting women today. In fact, heart disease kills more women each year than all forms of cancer combined. By knowing the most significant risks in women's health care and what you can do to combat these health care issues, women of all ages can take a proactive approach to leading healthier lives.

Heart Disease

More than 489,000 American women lose their lives each year as a result of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular diseases. In fact, more women than men die from heart disease each year. Until recently, little research focused on women and heart disease, but the good news is that's no longer the case. From research into the effects of hormone replacement therapy on heart health to studies of how cholesterol-lowering medications work in women, there's an unprecedented increase in the amount of information available to women working to live with and ward off heart disease.

Experts at the Mayo Clinic offer simple common sense advice to women (and men) in the fight against heart disease: don't smoke, eat a diet low in fat and rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, exercise at least 30 to 60 minutes a week, and maintain a healthy weight.
In addition, they encourage women to see their family doctor each year for a physical which includes blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. Studies indicate that there is a 46% increase in stroke risk for women for each 7.5 mm HG increase in their diastolic blood pressure, so monitoring blood pressure and controlling hypertension are vital.

Women who suffer migraines, are pregnant, have atrial fibrillation and those with the auto-immune disease Lupus also appear to run a greater stroke risk. Diabetes is another women's health care issue with a direct impact on heart health. The American Heart Association notes women with diabetes have a two to six times greater risk of heart disease and heart attack and are at a significantly greater risk of suffering a stroke. All of these risk factors make an annual visit with your doctor one of the best ways women can manage and improve the health of their hearts.

Health Survey Questions For Kids

Most kids got an A+ on our recent Health I.Q. survey. They knew their fruits and vegetables. They could point out important body organs, like the heart. Many even knew the name for the muscle in your upper arm (biceps). More than half got that one right, although 5% did pick a funny wrong answer: "gluteus maximus." Oops — that's the name of the muscles in your behind.

The survey's 10,000 participants were more than just health smart. They also were open and upbeat about improving their health. Nearly half said they were very interested to learn about health and about 63% said most of what they hear about health is interesting, rather than confusing, scary, or boring.
KidsHealth.org conducted the online survey in partnership with TIME for Kids. You can read more about the survey in the May 2 issue of the magazine.

Healthy and Looking to Get Healthier

Nearly all 10,000 kids rated their health as excellent (31%) or pretty good (58%). More than 85% said they were willing to try new fruits and vegetables. Only 16% said they never look at food labels, with most saying they check the label always (28%) or sometimes (56%).
Kids also had no problem identifying fruits and vegetables. Most also knew that oranges contain vitamin C and that eating a potato was a better choice than potato chips. Likewise, 94% knew that water was a better drink choice than soda. And only 10% didn't know where carrots grow (in the ground).
Speaking of healthy food, more than half of kids (60%) said they wanted an adult to teach them to cook. Others said they wanted an adult to help them eat more nutritious foods (43%), exercise more (43%), and learn how to do new sports.
About a third of kids (34%) said they also wanted an adult's help to lose weight. But generally, kids don't need to go on diets. Talk to a parent and your doctor if you are concerned about your weight.

Sex Offender Registry

Sex offenders who are releasing from confinement with required Department of Corrections (DOC) supervision may be supervised in the community under strict rules designed to protect their victims, vulnerable people, the general public and the offender.
In addition to requiring sex offender registration, the courts, and the DOC can impose many conditions and requirements for the period of DOC supervision. Offenders may be required to report to a Community Corrections Officer (CCO) whose primary responsibility is to help offenders become law abiding citizens while holding the offenders accountable.

Supervision:

Offenders must report to their CCO and be available for contact as directed and often must remain within specified geographic boundaries.

Registration:

Sex and kidnapping offenders who are required by law to register must do so prior to leaving state, county or city confinement. They must follow up by registering in person within 24 hours of their release at their county sheriff’s office.

Living arrangements:

Community corrections officers must approve sex offenders’residence and living arrangements. Offenders cannot move without permission. Generally, the release address of sex offenders is scrutinized to assess potential risk to the community and for the offender. Sex offenders often cannot own or control personal computers. If community corrections officers permit access to computers, they normally must have blocks that prevent access to specific sites. Offenders also cannot have contact with magazines, videos, telephone sites or anything else with pornographic content. Offenders must allow their community corrections officers to inspect every part of their homes.

Treatment:

Many offenders must obtain psycho-sexual evaluations and treatment from state-certified sexual deviancy counselors. Those who are required to do so must authorize their CCO to monitor their progress in treatment. Typically, offenders are not permitted to change counselors without approval and they must submit to polygraph and plethysmograph (which measure sexual arousal) testing at their own expense at the direction of their therapist or CCO.

Alcohol and drugs:

Offenders cannot purchase, possess or consume any mind or mood altering substances, including alcohol or drugs that haven’t been prescribed by doctors. They may have to undergo chemical dependency treatment and follow prescribed treatment, which may include Alcoholics Anonymous or other recovery meetings. Offenders are required to submit to urine and/or breathalyzer tests to monitor compliance. They also must submit to DNA and HIV testing.

Contact with past and potential victims:

Often offenders cannot have any contact, even by mail or through third parties, with past victims or victims’ families. The court may or may not allow an offender to have contact with certain members of his or her own family including his or her own children. Any contact with minors that is permitted by the court is monitored and managed by the CCO while the offender is under supervision.

Relationships:

Offenders must disclose information about their conviction(s) to potential adult sexual partners before beginning sexual relationships. They also must inform their CCO of romantic relationships so they can ensure no potential child victims are accessible. Some offenders may be required by their CCO to disclose their criminal history to their families and friends.

Entertainment:

Offenders cannot patronize any establishment in the sex industry, including topless dancing clubs, sex toy outlets or houses of prostitution.

Employment:

Education, work and community service are encouraged but with review and management of any potential risk. Offenders must have safety plans to avoid reoffending.

Weapons:

Felony offenders may not own, use or possess firearms or ammunition.

Financial obligations:

Offenders may be required to pay restitution, supervision, child support and all other financial obligations

The Obama Deception - Reviews  for those who don’t know, is the self-described “tip of the spear” in the Infowar. Jones is a nationally-syndicated radio host with a daily listening audience in the hundreds of thousands and he has directed and produced over 20 documentary films. The most recent film, The Obama Deception, could in time be remembered as one of the most important films in our history. The movie is indicative of being rush-released, which it clearly was. Timing is everything. Mr Jones knew what he was doing in getting this film out to the masses fast and I would venture is evidence of its critical timeliness at this moment in history. Never have so many people been so tantalizingly close to waking up their fellow man to the realities of the world we live in. This film may be the one to finally do that.

Barack Obama, despite what the Madison Avenue spin doctors try to tell/sell us, is not the ONE. I think Alex Jones and his film The Obama Deception might just be the ONE. The title of this film is slightly misleading because it is not a film about Obama per se, his questionable character, or even the legitimacy of his presidency in light of the questions surrounding the true origin of his birth. It does cover some of his campaign messages/promises and his subsequent reversals upon assuming office. Notably he has shirked on his commitment to withdrawal the troops from Iraq and also not to appoint lobbyists to his cabinet.

The Obama Deception Criticism

Why the only other review labels this movie one of the worst movies of all time is beyond me. It does not present a conspiracy based on an article of faith. There are so many proved and well researched facts here that whilst some might be able to argue against some, it's impossible to ignore the huge amount of evidence presented in this documentary. Admittedly Alex Jones is pretty full on and a bit to Michael Moore for my liking, but that is no basis to dismiss what is presented here. All of Alex Jones's works are well worth seeing as he is one of the few people shedding light on the dark side of the American (world) dream.
