Julie Chen reveals workplace racism led her for getting plastic surgery for ‘Asian eyes’

When it was her consider share a deep, dark secret on a segment on "The Talk," host Julie Chen explained that to be a young journalist, she underwent cosmetic surgery to enlarge her "Asian eyes."

Chen, 43, explained that she developed a deep insecurity about her eyes at 25 after having a boss in a Dayton, Ohio, news station told her that her heritage was hindering her career success.

The ladies of ‘The Talk’ happen to be revealing secrets all week on the show, and also on Wednesday, Chen shared in regards to deep insecurity.

"He said, 'Afterall Julie, how relatable have you been to community?" she recalled. "How big of the Asian community do we have in Dayton? In addition to that, through your Asian eyes, I've noticed that when you are on camera, you look disinterested and bored.'"

The "Government" host said identical sentiment was shared with a big-time agent she sought after while seeking to further her career.


Chen was told through an early boss and a business agent that she wouldn’t do well because of her ‘Asian’ eyes.

Chen was relayed through a former boss and an industry agent that she wouldn’t do well as a consequence of her ‘Asian’ eyes.

"He explained, 'I cannot represent you unless you get plastic surgery to create the eyes look bigger.'"

Chen said she a conversation back with her parents and extended family within the polarizing issue, but ultimately she thought we would contain the eye procedure. The chat show host also brought a before-and-after the surgery comparison.



"Once i been with them done, the ball did roll personally," she said. "I wondered, 'Did I give in towards the man?'"

"I've got to live with every decision that I've made … Also it got me to where we are today. And i am not planning to look backward."
